Google Phone?

The newest cellular industry shakeup has come from Google! Yes, Google! Everyone knows Google has been pushing their mobile operating system known as Android BUT now they are hinting at the possibility of working directly with a manufacturer (HTC) to be more involved on the development of the hardware and software. More like how Apple is with the iPhone - Apple not AT&T developed the iPhone AND more importantly the software. But the real twist is that there have been rumored reports about Google selling their phones direct to the consumer which would totally bypass how phones are typically sold today. To get more perspective on the story read on...

Scientists may soon grow new teeth in lab

by: Stephen Cauchi of the Sydney Morning Herald

AUSTRALIAN scientists are giving the dentally challenged something to smile about: the prospect of growing new teeth.

Stem cells are being used to grow new tissue around teeth in animals, a first step towards treating dental diseases in humans. The ultimate goal is for teeth to become the first complex organs to be created entirely from stem cells.

"I have no doubt that whole teeth regeneration is going to happen one day," said Mark Bartold, from the University of Adelaide's dentistry department.

Should the scientists' ambitions be realised, whole teeth would be grown in a laboratory using stem cells taken from a patient's baby or wisdom teeth. These live teeth would be implanted into empty gum sockets, replacing the current method of inserting artificial teeth on metal pins.

The science involves harvesting stem cells from the layer of dental pulp between the tooth's dentine (the layer immediately underneath the enamel) and the cementum (the layer which covers the tooth's root).

People would be encouraged to bank their wisdom and baby teeth, similar to the way umbilical cord blood is stored, so they could use these stem cells should they be required later in life.

Twitter is better than Facebook???

BY: nerdochaos

Twitter! Twitter, twitter, twitter. Tweet. Twitter tweet! I love twitter! In case you haven’t noticed, I’m a twitter addict! A few weeks ago, I became an avid twitterer! I think twitter is even cooler than Facebook, which is saying quite a lot about me. As of now, when I scroll through my cell phone, I see that almost HALF of my 153 messages are twitter related! Now THAT is a serious addiction!

The best part about twitter is that you don’t need a computer constantly! It’s totally mobile too, because you can use it via text message. And if you do not have text message access?? That’s okay too! You can use twitter on your mobile internet device or on your computer.

Now what exactly is twitter? Twitter is a social networking site and a micro-blogging site based on 140 characters of text. On twitter, you can update your status and receive other people’s messages, otherwise known as ‘tweets’ through your cell phone. You can also, rather than sending multiple text messages to multiple recipients, you can send one text message and reach a bunch of people! You can share links by using Tiny URLs, which is a service that condenses a web link, into a ‘tiny’ URL! Another cool thing about twitter is, you can update your Facebook message through the twitter server!

Who are these people? The people that you follow and receive tweets from can be anyone. Friends, family, actors, musicians, entertainers, and news services! You can receive these messages and then reply on the go! Who’s on twitter? Many people are. Many famous people update daily, and reputable news services such as NPR and BBC make hourly updates. With twitter you will never be behind on current events! It’s the world at your fingertips!

Google Ocean- The Rest of Our Planet

By: Hannah Freedman

googleearth.gifGoogle Earth, Google's virtual globe used by millions worldwide, is expanding. In this first major upgrade this relatively new software has faced, Google Ocean now lets you explore the other 75% of our planet. Users can now dive beneath a shifting water surface to explore the sea floor. According to BBC News, the map also includes 20 content layers presenting information from the world's leading scientists, researchers, and ocean explorers. Al Gore, attending the launch event in San Fransisco, said that the update would make Google Earth a "magical experience". Our oceans contain nearly 80% of all life on the planet and protection organizations hope the tool will improve awareness of issues facing undersea life. Sylvia Earle, the National Geographic Society's explorer in residence, said, "I cannot imagine a more effective way to inspire awareness and caring for the blue heart of the planet than the new ocean in Google Earth. For the first time, everyone from curious kids to serious researchers can see the world, the whole world, with new eyes,"

There are also updates on the terrestrial side, including GPS tracking, virtual time travel (where users can observe changes in satellite images, such as the 2006 World Cup stadium or the desertification of Africa's Lake Chad) and narrated tours of imagery and content in Google Earth. There are also updates to the Mars 3D section, so if users have had enough of the blue planet, they can always look at the red one.
